The area known as the Upcountry or Upstate South Carolina is comprised of ten counties and is located Northwest and Southeast of Interstate 85. The area population is estimated at 1.3 to 1.4 million and growing. Anderson, Greenville and Spartanburg are the three major metropolitan areas of the Upstate. The Greenville-Spartanburg International Airport is located between Greenville and Spartanburg in the city of Greer. The Gaffney area at the north end of the Upstate is known for its outlet stores.
Much of the Upstate is between 700 and 1200 feet above sea level, features rolling hills, several small and large lakes and views of the Blue Ridge Mountains. The western edge of the area includes the start of the Blue Ridge Mountains with Sassafras Mountain reaching an elevation of 3560 feet.
The climate allows enjoyment of many outdoor activities throughout much of the year from golf, soccer, baseball, softball, biking, to mountain hiking.
Upstate residents and visitors enjoy shopping and commercial areas to suit nearly every taste in vibrant downtown areas of its major cities. Farmer's markets and roadside markets offer locally grown produce straight from local farms and gardens.
While downtown condos offer the best in small city living, in much of the region, you only have to drive 10 to 20 minutes from the I85 corridor to enjoy rural living.
The Upstate South Carolina region includes many options for a higher education including Clemson University, Furman University, Bob Jones University, North Greenville University, University of South Carolina Upstate, Wofford College, Converse College and others.
The Upstate of South Carolina features many of amenities of much more densely populated areas without the corresponding traffic and congestion.
